Massive product recall: Rodent and bird contamination found at regional distribution center
INDIANA — A major health alert has been issued for consumers in Indiana, North Dakota, and Minnesota following a sweeping voluntary recall by Gold Star Distribution, Inc. The recall involves thousands of everyday items, ranging from popular snacks and cereals to over-the-counter medications and pet food.
The action was triggered after a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspection of the company’s Minneapolis facility at 1000 N. Humboldt Ave. uncovered severe unsanitary conditions. Investigators documented the presence of rodent feces, rodent urine, and bird droppings in storage areas where products were held.
The recall is unusually broad because it targets products based on their storage location rather than manufacturing defects. While no illnesses have been reported as of late January 2026, the FDA warns that any product held at the facility may be contaminated with “filth and harmful microorganisms.”
Common Brands and Items Affected:
- Food & Snacks: Pringles, Cheerios, Maruchan Instant Ramen, Takis, Hershey’s, Snickers, M&M’s, and Quaker products.
- Beverages: Gatorade, Arizona Iced Tea, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and Minute Maid.
- Over-the-Counter Drugs: Advil, Tylenol, NyQuil, and Benadryl.
- Pet Supplies: Purina (Dog/Cat/Puppy Chow), Friskies, Meow Mix, and 9Lives.
- Personal Care: Kotex, Always, and various cosmetics.
The FDA and Gold Star Distribution are urging the public not to consume or use any of the affected products.

This recall does not apply to frozen or refrigerated items, nor does it include products shipped directly from manufacturers to stores that bypassed the Gold Star warehouse.
The primary concern for health officials is the potential presence of Salmonella and Leptospirosis, both of which can be transmitted through animal waste.
| Potential Illness | Common Symptoms | Incubation Period |
| Salmonella | Fever, diarrhea (often bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. | 6 hours to 6 days |
| Leptospirosis | High fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, jaundice (yellow skin/eyes), and abdominal pain. | 2 days to 4 weeks |
Leptospirosis is particularly dangerous as it can lead to kidney damage, liver failure, or meningitis if left untreated. Health officials also emphasize the risk of cross-contamination; consumers may become ill by touching a contaminated package and then preparing food or touching their face without washing their hands.
Consult a doctor if you or your pet show symptoms of illness after using a recalled product, contact a healthcare provider or veterinarian immediately.
Gold Star has requested that consumers destroy the products immediately rather than shipping them back or returning them to retailers.
Refunds are available for those with proof of purchase or destruction. You can contact Gold Star Distribution at 612-617-9800 (7 days a week, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. CST).
