FDA raises alarm: 80,000+ McCafé Decaf K-Cups recalled over caffeine risk

INDIANA— Coffee drinkers in three states are being warned to double-check their morning brew. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially designated a recall of more than 80,600 McCafé Decaf K-Cup pods as a Class II health hazard, following a labeling error that could leave unsuspecting consumers buzzing.

The recall, initiated by Keurig Dr Pepper, specifically targets McCafé Premium Roast Decaf pods that may actually contain fully caffeinated coffee. While the product is not “spoiled” or contaminated, the presence of caffeine in a product labeled “decaf” poses a health risk to those with specific medical sensitivities.

The affected coffee was sold exclusively through Amazon and distributed to customers in California, Indiana, and Nevada. If you have an 84-count carton in your pantry, check for these specific markers:

The FDA’s decision on January 23, 2026, to elevate this to a Class II recall indicates a moderate level of concern. According to the agency, a Class II situation is one where the product may cause “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.”

For most, an unexpected dose of caffeine leads to minor jitters or a sleepless night. However, for those with caffeine allergies, anxiety disorders, cardiovascular issues, or who are pregnant, the effects can be more significant.

“Outreach to impacted consumers already happened directly in December,” a Keurig Dr Pepper spokesperson confirmed. “Consumers were encouraged to contact Keurig Consumer Care to arrange for a replacement.”

If you find the recalled batch in your kitchen:

  1. Stop Use: Do not consume the pods if you are sensitive to caffeine or avoiding it for health reasons.
  2. Dispose or Return: You can throw the pods away or contact Keurig for a replacement.
  3. Contact Support: If you missed the original Amazon notification, you can contact Keurig Consumer Care directly at 866-901-2739 to arrange for a full refund or product exchange.

While no illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported to date, health officials recommend erring on the side of caution. If you are not sensitive to caffeine, the pods are technically safe to drink—though they certainly won’t provide the “decaf” experience you purchased.
